Within weeks, the two of them have become rm friends and have radically set up an emergency medical shelter only 50 yards from the Western Front at Ypres. Mostly, they treat wounded and dying soldiers: very occasionally there are happier times: parties, trips and letters. And falling in love.

Devastation is all around – Mairi and Elsie are constantly at risk from shelling, machine-gun re, disease, gas – but the women react to these horrors in very di erent ways. eir compassionate nursing and extraordinary bravery saves thousands of lives however, as the war rages on, secrets and lies threaten to pull them apart and destroy their own.

Based on a true story, e War Nurses explores the complicated relationship between Elsie Knocker and Mairi Chisholm, two of the most decorated and photographed women of their time
