Synopsis

When you work in the police force, intuition is everything and police sergeant Don Colyear has it in spades. It’s a gift that gets him into as much trouble as it gets him out of.

Ostracised after an incident makes remaining in Glasgow impossible, Don is sent to work in a remote Highlands town. Stratharder promises to be a quiet place to keep his head down while the dust settles, but he doesn’t want to be there and the feeling is mutual. His new Inspector wants him gone and the locals wonder why he’s even arrived. Stratharder has never had a sergeant before and with the police station due to close, his position seems superfluous at best. Still, Don makes a go of things, striking up a good working relationship with rookie officer Rowan Forbes, teaching her what it is to be a community police officer.

As he starts to investigate petty crimes, it soon becomes clear there is something off about the town. A string of teenage disappearances hasn’t been given due attention. Then there’s the gruesome murder of the groundsman of the local sporting estate. What is behind the Inspector’s reluctance to properly investigate? Could the incidents be linked? As a police officer who has been brutally betrayed, Colyear is prepared to sacrifice his career for the sake of his own integrity. But beneath the surface of this seemingly tranquil town lies a dark underbelly and as Don delves further into its secrets, it’s not long until his own life is at risk.
