Dr. Fiona Vera-Gray, one of the UK’s leading feminist academics working on sexual violence, talks to Emma Barnett on BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour about her book, Women on Porn. Women on Porn was published in February 2024 by Transworld.

Fiona joined Emma on Woman’s Hour this week, as part of their ongoing porn series.

In the episode they discussed how when we think about porn, we still mainly think about men- men as the producers and consumers, and women as the products.

Fiona talked to Emma about how she investigates this in her book, through interviews with 100 women about their experiences and views on porn. Fiona wanted to introduce nuance and complexity to society’s dicussions around porn. Women on Porn captures what women really think about porn, rather than the stereotypes they are often reduced to.

They go on to discuss women’s invisible labour and the energy that women have to use to find their way around misogyny in porn. As women wrote into the programme to voice their own opinions, Fiona discusses how women are very good at talking to other women, but why not about porn? We need to open up this space to talk to our female friends about it.
